Early, Late, and Multiple Bidding in Internet Auctions
نویسنده
چکیده
In Internet auctions bidders frequently bid in one of three ways: either only early, or late, or they revise their early bids. This paper rationalizes all three bidding patterns within a single equilibrium. We consider a model of a dynamic auction in which bidders can search for outside prices during the auction. We nd that in the equilibrium bidders with the low search costs bid only late and always search, while the bidders with high search costs bid early or multiple times and search only if they were previously outbid. An important feature of the equilibrium is that early bidding allows bidders to search in a coordinated manner. This means that everyone searches except the bidder with the highest early bid. We also compare the static and dynamic auction and conclude that dynamic auction is always more e¢ cient but not always more pro table. JEL D44, L86, D83

Late and multiple bidding in second price Internet auctions: Theory and evidence concerning different rules for ending an auction
In second price internet auctions with a fixed end time, such as those on eBay, many bidders ‘snipe’, i.e., they submit their bids in the closing minutes or seconds of an auction. Late bids of this sort are much less frequent in auctions that are automatically extended if a bid is submitted very late, as in auctions conducted on Amazon. We propose a model of second price internet auctions, in w...
متن کاملInternet Auctions with ArtiÞcial Adaptive Agents: On Evolution of Late Bidding∗
Many internet auction sites implement ascending-bid auctions. Empirically, late bidding is frequently observed in hard-close auctions. In soft-close auctions, late bidding is less frequently observed. In this paper, we introduce an independent privatevalue repeated internet auction model to explain the observed bidding behavior. We use Þnite automata to model repeated auction strategies. ...
متن کاملSniping Bargains: Late Bidding on Pairs of eBay Auctions
Internet auctions have resulted in much data that may shed light on buying and selling behavior. Furthermore, they have allowed for field experiments to explore these phenomena with more control and with greater depth. Finally, they have revealed new behavioral patterns worthy of exploration. One of these behaviors is late bidding, or sniping, which occurs when people place bids close to the au...
متن کاملThe Timing of Bid Placement and Extent of Multiple Bidding: An Empirical Investigation Using eBay Online Auctions
Online auctions are fast gaining popularity in today’s electronic commerce. Relative to offline auctions, there is a greater degree of multiple bidding and late bidding in online auctions, an empirical finding by some recent research. These two behaviors (multiple bidding and late bidding) are of “strategic” importance to online auctions and hence important to investigate. In this article we em...
متن کاملInternet Auctions with Artificial Adaptive Agents: A Study on Market Design∗
Many internet auction sites implement ascending-bid, second-price auctions. Empirically, lastminute or “late” bidding is frequently observed in “hard-close” but not in “soft-close” versions of these auctions. In this paper, we introduce an independent private-value repeated internet auction model to explain this observed difference in bidding behavior. We use finite automata to model the repeat...
